Future stories
This page is research we have already mapped, sources we know exist and trails we can follow once we have the time and money. Right now we have enough of neither.
See donation optionsWhy this page exists
ExtraFokus does not accept advertising money or state subsidies. That means every story we publish is paid for by readers who have chosen to donate directly to journalism rather than to an algorithm. That gives independence. It also brings a hard limit: some of the most important stories require travel, time and research that we can only start when the funding is there. This page is the honest version of what we are waiting to be able to start on, and why.
The stories waiting
The port that must not close
Odessa is Ukraine’s most important export port and a bottleneck for world grain and food prices. We want to travel to the port and speak with dock workers, shipowners and exporters who keep ships sailing under constant drone attack, and follow the trail all the way to the price of grain on European supermarket shelves. It is a consequence for ordinary Europeans that few outlets have taken the time to show.
The city that lives with air-raid sirens as background noise
In Odessa, Shahed drones have become part of everyday life. Cafés stay open, schools teach and theatres stage performances while air-raid sirens sound in the background. We want to document the precise picture of a city that has learned to function under constant threat, without turning it into a fairy tale and without inventing a protagonist to carry the story.
How they become reality
There is no shortcut. The more regular donors and one-off donations, the faster we can book tickets, pay sources for their time and start research. Every story on this list moves closer with each donation that comes in.
